Oil Spill in Mindoro Philippines


An oil tanker named MT Princess Empress sank off coast of the Oriental Mindoro,Philippines on Feb.28,2023.Ten thousand liters of oil has spilled into the coast and beach and blacken shorelines, killing wildlife, and impacting locals' ability to fish, swim, and live. The coral reef, mangroves and sea-grass are also at risk from the spill.

The Philippine Coast Guard has raised the Oriental Mindoro oil spill to Tier 3, or the highest level, which means that the spills are “broader in scale and scope”. During the oil spilll, the first step is to deploy oil containment booms to prevent spilled oil spreading into large scope. And then skimmerand oil absorbent material and oil dispersant should be used for recoverying and absorbing and dispersant the spilled oil. In the beach area,the beach sealing boom could be prevent the oil spreading and polluting beach. How to prevent and clean up the oil becomes more and more important for the Philippine Coast Guard.
